National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)
The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is the most awarded lifeguard qualification. On completion you will be fully qualified to work as a Pool Lifeguard. The NPLQ can also be used as a stepping stone to a career within the leisure industry. RiversMeet employees many lifeguards on a full-time or part-time basis.
Course duration: 36 hours
Course Syllabus Outline
Training and assessment for this qualification is split into 3 sections (or QCF units). Each section is then broken into a further 3 elements.
Section 1 - The Lifeguard, Swimming Pool and Supervision (12 hours)
- Element 1 The Lifeguard and the Law
- Element 2 The Swimming Pool, Hazards and Control Measures
- Element 3 Swimming Pool Supervision
Section 2 - Intervention, Rescue and Emergency Action Plan (10 hours)
- Element 1 Intervention and Rescue
- Element 2 Rescue of a Casualty with a Suspected Spinal Injury
- Element 3 Emergency Action Plan
Section 3 - CPR, AED and First Aid (13 hours)
- Element 1 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Element 2 Automated External Defibrillation (AED) (Optional)(Extra 1.5 hours)
- Element 3 First Aid
(All units must be completed).
The course consists of physical training and theoretical classroom work, followed by a practical in-water and out-of-water assessment on pool rescue, first aid, CPR and lifesaving skills. Candidates must be aged 16 or over.

STA LEVEL 2 AWARD IN SWIMMING POOL WATER TREATMENT
The Swimming Pool Water Treatment qualification aims to enable candidates to understand the basic principles of the treatment of swimming pool water. It provides candidates with the knowledge and skills to competently test water and maintain safe bathing conditions.
Pre-requisites
- 16 years of age or older
Validity of Award
5 years
The award enables the candidate to:
- understand sources of pollution and control measure
- understand basic principles of pool water filtration & backwashing
- understand the key features of a swimming pool circulation system
- understand the potential dangers and hazards associated with suction entrapment and entanglement
- understand the role and purpose of disinfectants in swimming pools
- understand the pH scale, its function and related water terminology
- understand the basic principles of water testing, recording and interpretation leading to corrective action
- understand the importance of COSHH

STA AWARD IN SWIMMING TEACHING
Aim
This is the first of the two courses and qualifies you to teach a group of up to 10 swimmers who can range from complete non-swimmers up to the early improvers standard. The course consists of formal sessions with a tutor where practical teaching and theory sessions will take place. You will also have to complete a series of worksheets and some homework. The assessment of the course is by successful completion of the worksheets, by gaining at least 70% in a formal multiple choice theory paper and by passing a practical teaching examination which is conducted by an external examiner.

- 16 years of age or older
- current membership of STA
- hold the STA Pool Emergency Procedures or acceptable equivalent
- hold either the STA Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults certificate (available online at Swimming Teachers Association website) or acceptable equivalent.

STA CERTIFICATE IN SWIMMING TEACHING
Aim
This is the second of the two courses and extends the knowledge obtained in the Award course. This qualification allows you to teach groups of up to 20 swimmers who are in the Advanced/Competitive standard and includes the teaching of diving, rescue and survival skills, competitive starts and turns and in depth stroke analysis. Again the assessment consists of worksheets, a theory paper and practical examination. You also need to hold a recognised rescue qualification, a safeguarding children qualification and be a member of the STA.

- 17 years of age or older
- current membership of STA
- hold the STA Pool Emergency Procedures or acceptable equivalent
- hold the STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching or acceptable equivalent
- hold either the STA Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults certificate (available online at Swimming Teachers Association website) or acceptable equivalent.

STA SAFETY AWARD FOR TEACHERS
Aim
Holders of the Safety Award for Teachers are capable in pool rescue, first aid, adult, child and infant CPR techniques. Holders will be competent to deal with poolside emergencies in accordance with the HSE publication Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools
Course Pre-requisites
- Must Be 14 years of age or older
- Be able to swim 25 metres (candidates who cannot swim 25 metres must be capable of wading, and effecting a rescue, in a pool with a depth no greater than chest height)
- Be able to surface dive and recover an object from the deepest part of the pool
Course Information:
- Understanding the Pool Safety Operating Procedures
- Knowing how and being able to administer basic life support in a swimming pool environment
- Knowing how and being able to administer first aid in a swimming pool environment
- Being able to perform basic rescue skills in a swimming pool environment
- Knowing how to respond to a swimming pool emergency situation
- Understanding the importance of recording, reporting and analysing swimming pool emergency situations
