We regularly run a range of professional courses.

We have friendly and experienced Tutors, great classroom and practical facilities and you are welcome to visit the café for many different lunch options.


STA AWARD IN SWIMMING TEACHING

Aim

This is the first of two courses and qualifies you to teach a group of up to 12 non swimmers and improver participants.

The assessment of the course is through completion of worksheets, schemes of work, lessons plans, lesson evaluation forms and practical teaching and external assessment of a 30 minute practical lesson on the final day of the course


Pre-requisites

  • 16 years of age or older
  • current membership of STA

STA CERTIFICATE IN SWIMMING TEACHING

Aim

This is the second of the two courses and extends the knowledge obtained in the Award course. This qualification allows you to teach groups of up to 12 swimmers who are in the Advanced/Competitive standard and includes the teaching of diving, rescue and survival skills, competitive starts and turns and in depth stroke analysis. Again the assessment consists of worksheets, a theory paper and practical examination. You also need to hold a recognised rescue qualification, a safeguarding children qualification and be a member of the STA.


Pre-requisites

  • 16 years of age or older
  • current membership of STA
  • hold the STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching or acceptable equivalent

STA SAFETY AWARD FOR TEACHERS

Aim

Holders of the Safety Award for Teachers are capable in pool rescue, first aid, adult, child and infant CPR techniques. Holders will be competent to deal with poolside emergencies in accordance with the HSE publication Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools


Course Pre-requisites

  • Must Be 14 years of age or older
  • Be able to swim 25 metres (candidates who cannot swim 25 metres must be capable of wading, and effecting a rescue, in a pool with a depth no greater than chest height)
  • Be able to surface dive and recover an object from the deepest part of the pool

Course Information:

  • Understanding the Pool Safety Operating Procedures
  • Knowing how and being able to administer basic life support in a swimming pool environment
  • Knowing how and being able to administer first aid in a swimming pool environment
  • Being able to perform basic rescue skills in a swimming pool environment
  • Knowing how to respond to a swimming pool emergency situation
  • Understanding the importance of recording, reporting and analysing swimming pool emergency situations

1 day Water Fitness Instructors Training

Course objectives

On completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the science behind aqua
  • Understand Buoyancy and its use
  • Appreciate Hydrostatic pressure and the effects on the body
  • Appreciate Resistance and be able to utilise it
  • Understand Thermo regulation and its effects on participants
  • List a minimum of 8 benefits of aqua sessions
  • Work through a range of exercise progressions
  • Design & implement an aqua session with progressions
  • Feel the effects of the water and identify them
  • Identify the differences between shallow exercise and deep water exercises
  • Be aware of the importance of correct alignment and the forces working against it
  • Implement different strategies to increase / decrease the level of intensity
  • Pool Safety Procedures
  • Teach on poolside in a safe manner
  • Adapt demonstration timing to suit class without losing motivation
  • Teaching practice
